Frequently Asked Questions
What is the IFSC code of a bank?
IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. An IFSC code is a unique 11-digit alphanumeric number allotted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to identify every participating bank branch.
Is the IFSC code same as the branch code?
No. The branch code is only a part of the IFSC code. In an 11-character IFSC code, the last 6 characters represent the specific branch code.
What is a MICR code?
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) is a 9-digit code printed on the bottom of cheques. It is used by the Electronic Clearing System (ECS) to process and clear physical cheques efficiently.
Can two bank branches have the same IFSC code?
No, two bank branches can never have the same IFSC code. The IFSC code is explicitly designed to uniquely identify every single branch in the country for error-free money transfers.
What happens if I enter the wrong IFSC code?
If the IFSC code is invalid, the transaction will fail instantly. If you enter a valid IFSC code belonging to a different branch, but the account number does not match any account in that branch, the transaction will fail and the money will be refunded to your account.
Is IFSC code required for international transfers?
No, IFSC codes are strictly for domestic fund transfers within India (NEFT, RTGS, IMPS). For international transfers, a SWIFT code is required instead.
How can I transfer money using just a mobile number?
You can transfer money using SMS banking or UPI. For SMS banking, you generate an MMID and send a specifically formatted SMS to your bank including the payee's account number and IFSC code.
